DEPICT: Evaluation

Evaluation

The DEPICT Project that we (group) entered on, had a lot of roles that we allocated to each member of the group. Each of the members had the responsibility to do the task that was allocated to them. I had a little contribution when we were making the proposal for our project. However, I was given the role to do the production diary this is to organise our production schedule to avoid scheduling problems when doing the project. I was also responsible for the storyboarding – I encountered a couple of problems when doing this job: the initial storyboard didn’t go well and weren’t followed when we were doing the filming, therefore, I had to amend a couple of scenes to fit everything. Storyboarding took the longest to do, I had drawn my drafts, but as mentioned above, it didn’t go as planned. I was responsible for doing the filming, therefore, the storyboard tweaking didn’t get finished until the last minute.

There were a couple more problems we encountered during the production process such as actors being absent or have forgotten props that were needed in the filming. This, therefore, caused problems for the schedule that we were following. Although, these problems aroused, we managed to get everything done on time (deadline for filming). Lastly, I was responsible for compiling the completion of the whole pre-production paperwork (edited and as a PDF file) before sending it to everyone.

As for the finish product – ‘The Dodgy Deal’, although, we were satisfied with the end product I think there’s a lot more to improve. Especially, when doing the filming – I had shortcomings with the use of the camera since I haven’t used them in a while. In solution, in the future, I should look more further in the use of the camera when doing the filming. Although, we were organised – we couldn’t avoid having scheduling problems such having absent actors or missing props which leads to halting the filming process, therefore, in the future, we should make sure that props and actors are contacted and reminded to be on the set in the agreed time schedule we had set beforehand. The editing of the product went well – despite that, we could’ve experimented more with angles and shots during the making of the storyboarding and applying it to the filming process.

In conclusion, our pre-production process and filming process went well overall, despite the encountered problems and mistakes within the process. I hope that we could learn from these mistakes to avoid having problems in the future production that we will take part in.

Depict Research

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (2009)
I really like this video as it was really creative and well-edited. The effects magnetised me because it was well-crafted and the music was very suited to the scenes, it was very energetic and full of thrills. The fluidity of changing camera angles from POV shots to medium shots or wide shots were incredibly smooth. It had included various shot distances such as close-ups, medium shots, POV and a few other more. It had also included various camera angles such as worm's eye view when she was waking up near the end, it was then immediately followed up by a zooming out bird's eye view. It had a low angled shot when Alice drank from the bottle making her bigger, this is to create awareness that she was superior to anyone else by height. It was also quite effective using a bit of monotone here from this scene.
Overall, I think this is a really effective 90 seconds film which told a whole story, shot with various distances and angles with the music complimentary.

The Laundrette (2011)
This video was quite interesting, plot-wise it was intriguing. The filming was steady and on stand-by, the camera never followed the characters. The way they showed changes the scene was a simple change of angle and cut to go to the next scene. It was smooth and effective. It had various shot distances ranging from close-ups, medium shots and long shots. The music also complimented the video. Another thing was that it was HD and good quality.

Living (2016)
I find this video intriguing, it was very static but the shot angles and distance made up the element to make it a successful video. It started up as a close-up shot with the fish then followed up by an overview of the room through a wide shot. My initial reaction towards the elderly lady sitting in the corner was that she was dead because of how the lighting and contrast, it seemed that she was so blue and to me it connoted that she had been waiting for the doctor too long and died (not literally). The background music was subtle until the man ripped off the wallpaper which made a very scratchy sound.
Overall, I think this video was a very well-made production which complimented all the elements together.
